On-board Intellectual Aircraft Crew Support Systems

The human factor remains one of the most important problems affecting flight safety. On the other hand, however, the complexity of onboard control and navigational systems grows constantly. As such, a great deal of research has gone into creating onboard systems which would interact with pilots and assist them in order to avoid fli...

Synthesis of Adequate Mathematical Descriptions of Physical Processes

For effective use of the results of computational calculations, it is necessary that the computational schemes used correspond to real physical processes, so that the schemes are adequate. The issue of adequacy is currently poorly understood and there are also no generally accepted criteria of adequacy. This book is the first to add...

Infrasound Propagation in an Anisotropic Fluctuating Atmosphere

This book presents the theory and results of experimental studies of the propagation of infrasound waves in a real atmosphere with its inherent fine-scale layered structure of wind speed and temperature. It is motivated by the fact that the statistical characteristics of anisotropic (or layered) fluctuations of meteorological field...

Measurements, Instruments and Models of Applied Optoelectronics

This book serves to familiarize the reader with measurements of optoelectronic components. Its main focus is on the implementation of these measurements and the results obtained, specifically the static electrical and optical characteristics. It therefore links these measurements to solid state physics. Steps are taken to verify th...

The Life of Cracks

Many people find the concept of fracture and damage mechanics to be somewhat problematic, mainly because, until recently, close attention in mechanics was focused especially on the strength and resistance of materials. In this sense, to speak of fracture is as uncomfortable for some as it is to speak of a deadly disease. In confron...

Fundamentals of Information and Communication Technologies

This book covers the basic issues and principles of information and communication technologies. It explains the key theories, techniques and applications of this field for both academic and professional audiences. Beginning with an overview of information and communication networks and architecture, the text explores information theory, coding and modulation schemes, wave propagation, wireless and wireline communications, network security, network management, network planning and optimisation methods for digital communication networks.

Improvement of the Structural Integrity of Ceramic Parts

In contrast to previous epochs, we live in a “new ceramic world” where advanced ceramics are engineered for specific applications. This book highlights studies in the fields of fracture mechanics and materials science as promising avenues for the quality control of ceramic products. It proposes new approaches to solving issues regarding the structural integrity of ceramic parts, namely techniques of crack initiation and retardation in ceramic parts of arbitrary shapes explaining regularities of crack retardation kinetics. It also presents a developed technique of high-temperature reduction-oxidation (redox) treatment of Ni-containing cermets for solid oxide fuel cell anodes. The book should be useful to mechanical engineers and materials scientists developing new ceramic and superhard materials and designing corresponding products of complex shapes.
