Keeping Up with Technologies to Improve Places

Keeping Up with Technologies to Improve Places brings together a selection of papers presented at the First International Academic Conference on Places and Technologies, held at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture in April 2014. The conference was organized by the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture and the Urban Laboratory, in order to bring together leading researchers, professors and PhD students, as well as practitioners, to create a platform for sharing knowledge and know-how in the fields of growth, new technologies, and the environment.

The book will appeal primarily to members of the academic community in the fields of urban design, planning and architecture, engineering and technical sciences, and the humanities and social sciences, including professors, researchers and PhD students. It will also be of interest to professional institutions and companies, governments, and NGOs, who will directly benefit from the knowledge and know-how sharing presented here.


Dr Eva Vanista Lazarevic is Professor at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, and an expert in urban renewal and regeneration, on which she has published two award-winning books. Her professional focus is urban design and contextual architecture. She is Founder of the architectural design studio “Atelier Eva Vaništa Lazarević”, and the designer of several large residential complexes, villas, interiors and hotels. She has won prizes in national and international architectural competitions, and is the editor and author of a number of papers and publications. Previously the Counsellor of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial planning and Head of Department of Urbanism, she is also the Director of the international conference “Places and Technologies”.

Dr Milena Vukmirovic is Associate Researcher at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture and Assistant of the Director of Urban Planning of the City of Belgrade. Her research is focused on the quality of the everyday environment and competitiveness of cities. She is the author of two books and several papers in peer-reviewed journals. She is a founder of the CSO 5 km/h, which promotes walking as a sustainable transport mode, co-founder of the Urban Laboratory, Belgrade, and Executive Coordinator of the “Places and Technologies” conference.

Dr Aleksandra Krstic-Furundzic is Professor at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture. Previously the Head of the Department of Architectural Technologies, her fields of expertise include architectural constructions, passive and active solar systems, industrialised construction, and building refurbishment technologies. She is a member of the Editorial Board of two international journals, participates in several national and international programs in the field of energy efficiency and advanced building technologies, and is the author of a number of books, chapters in international volumes, and scientific papers.

Dr Aleksandra Đukić is Associate Professor at the University of Belgrad – Faculty of Architecture. Her professional activities and research are focused on urban design and planning, urban morphology and urban renewal. She is the author and editor of a number of books, chapters, and scientific papers, and a member of the Editorial Board of two international journals. She has received numerous awards from international architectural and urban competitions and exhibitions.
