This is a primer for beginners who aim to understand the basics of criminal procedure and appreciation of evidence by Indian courts. It is a culmination of a systematic study of few selected and disposed-of criminal trials by the Courts of Judicial Magistrate and Courts of Session in certain parts of India. These disposed-of cases have been studied using the actual record room files of completed trials which took place in the respective Court/s. The cases have been discussed in a fashion which elucidates upon the various legal nuances involved in a criminal trial including, but not limiting to, for instance, the filing of the First Information Report/Criminal Complaint; Framing of Charges; Examination of Witnesses, Appreciation of Evidences; Judgement Writing; and Criminal Appeal. The book employs various real texts and images from the disposed-of cases selected to explain the ideas.

Abhishek Negi is an assistant professor of law at the Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai, India. He is also a visiting faculty member of law at the National Institute of Securities Markets, India, and the Bombay Stock Exchange, India, and teaches courses on law and justice. Abhishek is pursuing his doctorate at the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research, India, in crimmigration studies. His research and teaching interests include criminal law, tort law, constitutional law, legal theory, AND administrative law. Abhishek has published in several reputed journals and has also written book chapters and op-eds. In a national level project named ‘Police System in India’ (sponsored by the Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy and Training, India), Abhishek has acted as Co-Investigator for the State of Madhya Pradesh, India. His current area of research is crimmigration studies in the Indian context.
