"[Second Thoughts on Capitalism and the State is a] profoundly reflective book shows a pathway forward for academics and activists alike who are stymied by the disconnect between deep critical scholarship and emancipatory social change, yet who will still not give up the good fight."

Script and Addiction: Powerlessness

Addiction to alcohol and other substances is a growing problem today. The Alcoholics Anonymous 12 Steps Programme is the standard method for treating addictions, and defines an ordered program which, if completed, should break the addiction. However, the level of success here is low. Two main problems in this regard are the failure of the addict to complete the programme and their relapse back into addiction. Treatment of addiction by other methods is even less successful. A new approach is needed, one which better integrates those treating addiction.

By combining the 12 Steps programme and the idea of “Life Script”, a concept from Transactional Analysis, this book demonstrates that a much higher success rate can be achieved. The author pioneered this approach for five years, achieving an improved rate of success from this combination. The book includes case studies to underpin its findings.

Maria Moore holds an Honours degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Integrative Psychotherapy, Postgraduate Diplomas in Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and a Diploma in Supervision. She has more than 25 years’ experience in practising psychology, psychotherapy and counselling. She was an original pioneer of the idea of online cyber communities, with her original pilot study being published in the International Journal of Therapeutic Communities. She has researched the merging of Transactional Analysis psychotherapy and the 12 Steps Programme for the last five years, and introduced treatment programmes based on the ideas reported in this book to a leading addiction clinic, where, until recently, she served as Clinical Director. These achieved far lower relapse rates than other methods.
